昨日は水泳・カヌー学習が５・６時間目にありました。今週の金曜日に予定されている遠泳・カヌー大会に向けて，今回の練習は漁港で行われました。まず，児童生徒は本番の遠泳のコースで泳ぐ練習をしました。そしてカヌーでは，スプリントとリレーの練習に取り組みました。とても熱い日差しの中でしたが，無事に，楽しそうに海を泳ぎました。今までの練習の成果を，遠泳・カヌー大会で見るのを楽しみにしています。

Yesterday, the students had swimming and kayak practice during fifth and sixth period. This time, they practiced at the port to prepared for the upcoming swimming and kayak meet. First, the students practiced for the long-distance swim. Then, they practiced for both the sprint and relay kayak events. It was a very hot day, but we were able to enjoy the practice safely. We are excited to see the results that come from all the practice our students have done.

　長い雨の日が続き、先週から急に暑い日が続いています。天気が晴れたので、学校の残りの花園に花を植えています。長雨で、枯れてしまった花を植え替えたり、根を伸ばし、ポットで窮屈そうにしていた花を新たな場所に植えていったりしています。花園で日を浴びる花は嬉しそうです。

　子どもたちも、何度も植えているため、てきぱきと植えています。これから、水かけと草とりを頑張って、花満開の花園になるようにしていこう。

We had been having many rainy days, but recently the weather has cleared up. With the sun out, we've been able to plant flowers around our school. The soil had hardened in many places, but after re-working it, we were able to transfer many plants. Our students have had many chances to plant flowers this semester, so they have become very good at it. We will continue to water the plants, and remove any weeds to ensure they all bloom.

　今日は、小学５・６年生で特別活動の研究授業がありました。内容は、「かけがえのないわたしたち」ということで、自分の個性を考えました。

　まず、いのちのはじまりについて考えました。いのちが生まれるのはたくさんの奇跡の連続であることを学びました。中でも、受精する確率が、宝くじの当たる確率より低いことを知ると驚いていました。

　次に、自分の個性を考えました。そして、友達の個性を考え、友達に伝える活動をしました。

　最後に、自分と友達が考えた個性を４つに分類しました。子どもたちは、友達に教えてもらった個性を書いた付箋を見て、嬉しそうにしていました。また、分類の中の１つに、「友達は知らないけど、自分は知っている」というグループがあった。分類の説明のとき、「このグループの個性は、友達に教えると、より関係性が深まるかもしれない。だけど、伝えないで大切にしてもいいんだよ。」と教えられると安心して、嬉しそうにうなずいている子どももいました。これから、自分、そして友達の個性を大切にしていってほしいです。1人１人、かけがえのない命だから。

Today during fifth period, a special research class was held for the fifth and sixth graders. For the class, the students discussed about individuality, and how we are all irreplaceable. First, they thought about the origins of life. They were surprised to learn that the probability of fertilization is lower than the probability of winning the lottery. Then they reflected about what makes them unique. After that, they wrote what makes their friends unique on sticky notes, and passed them out. When they finished giving out, and receiving the notes, they separated them into four different categories. This was a great opportunity for the students to learn more about what makes them unique.

　６月２５日（土）は、ふるさと美化作業が行われました。口之島をきれいにするために、子ども会が企画しました。２組に分かれて、１時間程度作業をしました。

　１組は、地域花園であるマリンガーデンに花を植えました。最後には、中学生が手作りした看板を設置し直し、きれいな花園になりました。もう１組は、島内のゴミ拾いと学校農園の草とりです。小さなゴミまで見つけて、島内の道路をきれいにしていきました。また、学校農園はサツマイモのつるが伸びていたので、つる返しもすることができました。美化作業をすることで、少しでも口之島に日頃のお礼ができたでしょうか。

On Saturday, June twenty-fifth, we had our island beautification event. The students, their parents and guardians, and the staff split up into two teams, and worked for about an hour. Group one planted flowers at the island's Marine Garden. After planting, the students put up the garden's new sign, which was made by the students. Group two walked around the island picking up trash. Then they went to the school's field to tend to the sweet potatoes. It was a great opportunity to give back to the island.

　今、中学３年生の理科で、遺伝の規則性について学習しています。そこで、メンデルが分離の法則を見つけたように、遺伝の法則を見つける実験をしてみました。１枚はＡ、もう１枚はaと書かれたカードを袋に入れて、袋から１枚取り出します。これを２人で同時に行い、遺伝子の組み合わせを決めていきます。これを、５０回行いました。中学２年生の数学で確率を学習しているので、結果は２人とも知っていました。そのため、ＡＡなどの出にくい組み合わせが出ると、「おー」と嬉しそうな反応を見せていました。また、５０回と同じことを繰り返すので、「あと２０回だよ。」と声をかけ合って実験していました。５０回と少ない回数でしたが、メンデルの実験結果と同じような結果出て、実験成功となりました。

Right now, the ninth graders are studying about the laws of inheritance in their science class. The students conducted an experiment to find these laws of inheritance, much like Mendel did when he discovered them. For the experiment, each student was given a bag two cards in it, one with an 'A' written on it, and another with an 'a'. Then at the same time, the students pulled one card from the bag to create the gene pair. They knew the probability of pulling two 'A' cards, or two 'a' cards, so they were very pleased then when they did. After they finished, they came to the same result that Mendel did, making this experiment a success.

　今、中学１年生は「身近な物質の性質」について勉強しています。そこで、金属と非金属の性質を見つける実験を行いました。「金属は電気を通すのか、そして、磁石がつくのか」を調べました。アルミ缶やスチール缶、釘などの金属とペットボトルや瓶、木材などの非金属を順番に試していきます。すると、アルミ缶では磁石につかないのが納得いかなかったのか、磁石の間に挟む荒業を見せる場面もあり、楽しく実験することができました。これからも、たくさんの疑問を見つけ、調べていきましょう。

Currently, the seventh graders are studying the properties of matter around them. Among those, they have been conducting experiments with metals and nonmetals. One such experiment was seeing if these materials conducted electricity, or were attracted to magnets. For the metals, they tested aluminum cans, steel cans, and knives. For the nonmetals, they worked with plastic bottles, glass bottles, and wooden items. At one point the students were not convinced that the magnets wouldn't stick to the cans, so they tried many ways to get them to stay. The students really enjoyed the experiments. We hope they continue to ask questions, and seek the answers.

　今日は、海上安全教室が行われました。実際に、海上保安庁の職員の方が来校して、海での安全を守るための学習をすることができました。

　まず、海の安全についてのクイズをしました。そして、海上保安庁の仕事は「①人命を守る。②海の交通安全を守る。③海の情報を広く知らせる。」であることを学びました。また、ある事例から海に行くときの注意を考えました。

　次に、海での危険について学びました。海でおぼれたときやおぼれている人を見つけたとき、「浮いて待て」を合言葉にして、身近なもので浮くものを考えたり、ライフジャケットの正しいつけ方を学んだりしました。そして、心肺蘇生法や搬送法について学び、実践しました。

　最後に、海上保安庁の仕事に就くためにはどのような進路を進めばよいかなどの紹介がありました。質問コーナーでは、胸章の違いや今までで一番大変だったことは何か、など多くの質問が出されました。

　口之島では、海で泳ぐ機会が多くあります。海で泳ぐときは、今日学んだことを活かして自分の命、大切な人の命を守りましょう。

Today, three members of the Japan Coast Guard came to our school to talk to our students about ocean safety. They started with the dangers the ocean holds, and how to safely enjoy playing in the ocean. This included teaching them the proper way of wearing life jackets, and giving everyone a crash course on CPR. Then talked about what it is to be part of the Japan Coast Guard. We hope our students use all the knowledge they gained today to keep themselves safe when playing in the ocean.

　今日、中学生は期末テストでした。口之島中学校では、１学期は中間テストがないため、今年度初めての定期テストでした。１日に５教科テストをするので、慣れていない生徒は少し大変そうでした。５時間目には、少し疲れが見えましたが、みんな最後まで頑張って取り組んでいました。これからの振り返りが大切です。ただ、点数が...となるのではなく、テストまでの自分の取り組み方がどうだったか見直し、次の課題としていきましょう。

Today the middle school students had their term tests. Here at Kuchinoshima Middle School, the students don't have final exams for the first semester. Today the students had five tests, making it a little hard for students who are not used to this format. By the fifth test, some of the students were showing signs of tiredness, but they worked hard until the end. We hope this experience is useful for them, not only to see what scores they receive, but also to reflect on how they prepared for the exams.

　今月の初めに，青い空ガーデンで草とりをしたり，耕したりしました。昨日は，この花園で地域花植えをしました。花をたくさん植えました。まず緑化委員会の児童生徒が今回植える花を紹介しました。そして児童生徒，くちっこ園の子どもたちは花植えに取り組みました。土がちょっと固かったですが，みんな頑張ってしっかり植えることができました。植えた花が大きくなって咲くのを楽しみにしています。

Earlier in the month, our students picked the weeds, and prepared the soil at the Blue-Sky Flower Garden. Today we held our island flower planting event, where we planted many flowers there. First the students in the gardening committee introduced the flowers that we were planting today to the rest of the students. Then all the students, including the preschoolers, helped in planting the flowers. The soil had hardened, but the students did their best, and planted the flowers well. We can't wait for the flowers to grow bigger, and bloom.

　十島村も梅雨に入り、雨の日が多くなりました。昨日は、雨が上がり、やっとプールで初泳ぎです。口之島名物の潮が引くと現れる自然のプールは、とても透明度が高く、魚を見つけることができます。最初は、子どもたちは「冷たい～」と言っていましたが、慣れてくると楽しそうな笑い声が響いてきました。また、カヌーに乗ることもでき、初めて乗る子どもたちは、少しずつ漕ぐことができるようになっていました。

The rainy season has finally come to Toshima, and we have been having many rainy days. But yesterday, the rain stopped, and we were able to have our first day of swimming classes. One of the Kuchinoshima's more popular spots is our Hirase ocean pool. When the tides recede, the natural pool reveals itself, allowing for swimming in very clear waters where one can even see fish swimming. The students found the water to be very cold at first, but after getting used to it, they splashed and swam joyfully. The students also ride kayaks during the swimming classes. We have some students who are riding for the first time, and are quickly getting the hang of it.

　今日はＫ先生の小５・６年生の国語の研究授業が行われました。今回の授業では，児童たちが発表を行いました。５年生は「みんなが過ごしやすい町へ」という単元で，口之島にあるくちっこ園やなごみの里という施設について調べたことを発表しました。６年生は「時計の時間と心の時間　～主張と事例～」という単元で，もしタイムマシンがあったら，未来か過去かどちらに行きたい？というテーマについて，それぞれの意見を発表しました。発表する前に，学年ごとに発表する時のポイントを確認しました。５年生はゆっくり，はっきり，大きな声で発表しよう。６年生は相手を納得させるために，大きな声で，分かりやすく発表しようということでした。多くの先生方の前でしたが，児童たちはみんな上手に発表することができました。

　６月２０日（月）、中学生は今年度初めての定期テストがあります。いよいよテストまで１週間をきりました。今回は、５教科（国語・数学・理科・英語・社会）のテストです。中学１年生にとっては、初めての定期テストになります。今までは１日に５つもテストを受ける機会はほぼありませんでした。そこで、１週間前の６日に、中学１年生はテストに向けての取り組み方を考えました。授業でも、テスト前のため、振り返りの演習の時間が多くなっています。時間を有効に活用して、しっかりテストに向けて取り組んでから、テストに臨みたいですね。

On June twentieth, the middle school students will take their first examinations of the school year. They now only have one week left to study for the five subjects they will be tested on. As for the seventh graders, this is the first time for them to take middle school exams. They haven't had to take five exams in one day. So, we have been teaching them what mindset to have to tackled these exams. In their classes they have been reviewing a lot for the tests. We hope our students use their time effectively, and do their best on the tests.

　６月１１日は、土曜授業でした。十島村の土曜授業では、ＴＶ会議システムを利用して、全島でトカラ集会を行っています。今回の担当は、平島の担当で「としまの歌」を歌ったあと、平島に関するクイズが出されました。「平島にある温泉の名前は？」「平島は１周何ｋｍか？」などの問題が出されました。「あかひげ温泉」という名前の温泉があることなど、自分の島以外のことについて、知ることができました。最後に、感想を発表するところでは、口之島小中学校代表としてＹさんが「自分の島と比較しながら、クイズを楽しむことができました。」と感想を述べることができました。

On Saturday, June eleventh, there was a Tokara School Assembly. Tairajima was in charge of the assembly, and they quizzed all the schools on facts about their island. For example, they asked about name of their onsen, and the size of the island. Our students were able to learn more about another island in the village. Lastly, one of our students presented their impressions of the assembly, saying that they enjoyed comparing their island with Tairajima while taking the quiz.

　５月１１日のスケッチ大会で描いた絵がもうすぐ完成しそうです。６月６日の午後の２時間を使って、中学生は仕上げに入っていきました。スケッチした絵に墨入れをして、色を載せていきます。色を塗っては、ティッシュなどでぼかして、違う色を重ねていきました。すると、画用紙の中に、本物の口之島の風景があるようなできあがりになってきました。１人１人の個性があふれる作品になり、見ている私たちが嬉しい気持ちになりました。

Our students have been working hard to finish the paintings they started in May during the sketch event. This past Monday, the middle schoolers worked on their pieces for two hours. They have finished outlining their pieces with ink, and are now adding in the colour. Using many different techniques, our students are capturing the natural beauty of Kuchinoshima well. We are very happy to see them work so hard on their pieces.

　今日は、十島村のＴＶ会議システムを使って、小学５・６年生が１校時に、中学３年生が５校時に島合同授業を行いました。

　中学３年生は、全７島で自己紹介と自分の受検に対する悩みを発表しました。これから、高校入試を受ける生徒がほとんどです。勉強についての悩みや受検校をどのように決めればよいかなどの悩みが出されました。悩みを共有することで、悩んでいるのは自分だけでないことに気付くことができました。十島村全体で、受検に臨んでいければいいなと思います。

　小学５・６年生は平島，小宝島，悪石島の５・６年生と合同授業を行いました。アイスブレイクや自己紹介をした後「あなたはどっち？A or B」という活動を行いました。今回は「朝食には，パンがいいか？ご飯がいいか？」，「朝か夜ならどちらが好きか？」というお題について，それぞれ自分の意見を出し合いました。どの島もみんな積極的に発表し「Ａさんと同じ意見だ！」「Ｈ君はなぜ朝が好きなのだろう？」と大盛り上がりでした。たくさん意見を交換する中で，友達の新たな一面が発見できたようです。２学期には修学旅行があるので，今後も合同授業を通して仲を深めていきたいです。

　今日の３校時にくちっこ園の園児と小学生で交流をしました。カラーリングを使って，けんけんぱをしたりマットの色と同じカラーリングの色分けゲームをしたりしました。小学生とくちっこ園の合同チームもあり，協力して行っていました。そのあとには，わなげをして最後にはざるにモールを通すゲームをしました。ざるにモールを通すのは，集中力の必要なゲームでみんなざるを見つめて頑張っていました。

Today during third period, the preschool students came to the school to share some time with the elementary school students. They played many different games together, like hopscotch and ring toss. Lastly, they played a game that involves putting pipe cleaners through a strainer. It involves a lot of concentration, so the children worked hard to get them through the strainer holes.

　もうすぐ、プール学習があります。そこで、先週の３日（金）に職員で海岸清掃をしました。子どもたちが転ばないように、蔓払いをして、石を整備しました。また、この日は、天気がよく、とても海がきれいでした。このきれいな海で子どもたちと学習できる日が楽しみになりました。口之島の自然に感謝です。

Soon we will start our swimming classes. So, on Friday of last week, the teachers went out to clean the ocean pool area. To prevent anyone from tripping, the grass on the steps was cut, and any rocks were moved to the side. The weather was really nice, making it perfect for the cleanup. Our students are really excited to swim in this beautiful ocean pool. We are really grateful for the nature here on Kuchinoshima.

　この何週間か曇りと雨の天気が続きましたが，今日はひさしぶりに晴れました。この晴れの天気の中，児童生徒は，朝の活動時に一輪車で遊びました。初めて乗る児童生徒もいて，一生懸命練習に取り組んでいる姿が見られました。上手に乗れるように支えていきたいと思います。

After weeks of cloudy and rainy weather, today was a beautiful day. The students enjoyed the weather, and practiced riding unicycles in the morning. Some of the students are just starting out with the unicycle, and they are doing their best to improve. We hope to help them along as best we can.

　５月３１日（火）に緑化委員会が地域の花園の草とりをして，今日は中学生が土づくりをしました。６月１６日に、地域花植えを企画しているからです。そのための準備をしました。小学生の２人も根っこから草をとろうと頑張りました。また、今回は花園の形づくりからでした。中学生は石を動かし、花園づくりもしました。最後には、きれいな花園ができあがりました。

On Tuesday, the gardening committee picked weeds from one of the island's flower gardens. They worked hard to pick the weeds from the roots. And today, the middle school students outlined the garden with rocks, and prepared the soil there for planting, creating a lovely garden ready for planting. We hope to plant many flowers there during our planting event in June.

　今日の体育の授業はバレーでした。小学２年生から中学校３年生まで一緒に行います。最初、チームに分かれてパス練習をしました。次に、サーブの練習をしました。まだまだ、ボールのコントロールが難しそうです。最後に、ゲームをしました。今回のルールは、何回でもチーム内でパスを繋いでいいことにしました。すると、チームコートの反対側までいったボールを追いかけて、懸命にプレーする姿が見られました。

Today the students played volleyball during P.E. class. First, they split up into teams, and practiced passing the ball to each other. After that, the students took turns practicing how to serve. Then it was game time! One of the rules for today's matches was that the teams could pass the ball as many times as they wanted before sending it over the net. They all really enjoyed today's P.E. class.
